Chapter Seven

After leaving Vic and Anna in their rooms asleep, Elsa stood in the living room staring at the blood-stained sofa. Charles’s blood soaked the soft cream-colored material. Dropping to her knees, she pulled the bucket of water she had taken with her closer. Lifting a cloth from the water, she began to rub the huge stain, desperate to remove the evidence of the fact that Charles could have been killed. Unshed tears stung her eyes, wanting to fall. After a while, she stopped to examine the soiled cushion. There wasn’t any significant improvement. She threw the cloth back into the bucket and suddenly burst into tears. Sinking lower to the floor, she hung her head and sobbed quietly.

“Elsa.”

She jumped at the sound of Charles’s voice behind her. Dashing away her tears, she whipped around. “What are you doing down here? You’re supposed to be in bed.”

He eyed her with concern, his heart constricting at the sight of her sitting on the floor in tears. “You didn’t come back, so I came to get you.” He took careful steps toward her. “Why are you on the floor?” His gaze swung to the bucket that she pointed to.

“I was trying to get the blood out of your mother’s sofa, but I can’t. The chair is ruined.” She began to sob harder.

Charles sat beside her on the floor but left space between them. “Are you crying because the piece of furniture is ruined?”

She sniffed and shrugged. “I don’t even know why I’m crying,” She paused, “Well, I suppose I’m crying about everything.”

He inched closer to her. “Talk to me.”

“No, you need to go back to bed and let me finish cleaning up.”

He sighed. “I’m not leaving you down here. Please, talk to me. Maybe you will feel better if you let everything out.”

Elsa leaned her head back against the chair. “I’m angry, frustrated, and terrified, Charles. To make matters worse, the bloodstain won’t come out of the damn sofa.”

Charles shoved down a grin. “So after everything you have been through, the stubborn bloodstain in the sofa was your undoing?”

Her lips curved into a slight smile. “The chair will have to be thrown out.” She fell into silence. After a while, she shuffled closer to him and leaned her head on his shoulder. “I want it all to be over. I’m tired of being afraid for the lives of everyone that I love.”

Charles let out a soft sigh. He would give anything to make her feel safe again. “Adam won’t be in our lives forever. I promise.”

“I know he won’t.” She sucked in a breath and lifted her head to face him. “Because I’m going to go to him.”

Charles stiffened. “I beg your pardon?”

“Since it is me he wants. I’m going to talk to him.”

Charles let out a growl. “Get that ludicrous idea out of your head right now, Elsa.”

She sprang to her feet. “You said yourself that he has become obsessed with me. I will go to him and let him know that I want nothing to do with him.
